Events & Awards

Modern British Studies Association Conference

The Modern British Studies Association’s primary event is its annual conference, which provides an opportunity to share research, meet colleagues and celebrate recent scholarship in our field. All higher education institutions may be considered for hosting, and the conference circulates across a wide range of institutions.

The launch event ‘The Polycrisis’ will be held in summer 2026 at the University of Birmingham.

Future Events

  • In 2027 we are excited to be working with the IHR as they partner with the North American Conference on British Studies on the summer conference in London.
  • In 2028, MBS will be hosted by the University of Bristol, and in 2029, the University of Cambridge.

If you are interested in hosting an MBSA event, including the annual conference, please get in touch.

Awards & Prizes

We are delighted to announce the establishment of a prize for best paper delivered by an ECR (a doctoral student or anyone in temporary employment within 6 years of award of doctorate) at MBS2026. £200 will be awarded, with winners notified within one month of the conference.

The Modern British Studies Association is currently exploring additional opportunities to establish new prizes in the field, with our priority being support for early career researchers, such as annual prizes for best first book and best first journal article in the field.

If you are interested in supporting or sponsoring a prize, please get in touch.
